In this 6 of 7 video in the migration series, Gaurav walks though the essential components for creating a comprehensive roadmap for a successful migration from Tableau or Click to Power BI. A Migration Roadmap is crucial in garnering internal support for the project. Key elements of this roadmap include defining the "why," "what," "how," and "when" of the migration, as well as creating a concise executive summary for key stakeholders.

Overview

This video, "Microsoft Power BI Migration: Part 6, The Roadmap," outlines the essential components for creating a comprehensive roadmap for a successful migration from Tableau or Click to Power BI. The video emphasizes that a well-defined roadmap is crucial for gaining project approval and establishing the approach, cost, and timeline for the migration.

Key components of a good migration roadmap discussed in the video include:

  • Defining the "why" of the migration by articulating the business case and total cost of ownership, building upon the business drivers identified in earlier stages.
  • Clearly defining "what" will be migrated, establishing a clear scope (including what is out of scope) based on data gathering and the Proof of Concept (PoC) findings. As discussed in our previous conversation about Part 5, the PoC helps inform this step by providing insights into the existing environment [our conversation history].
  • Laying out "how" the migration will be done, considering report priorities, business line sequencing, deadlines, and the magnitude of work to create an agile migration approach with work estimates.
  • Defining "when" the work will be done, which involves identifying necessary resources (project manager, architects, developers, users, QA), their associated costs (internal and external), and a realistic timeline to present to business sponsors for approval.
  • Creating a crisp and clear executive summary that consolidates key information from all sections of the roadmap, as this is often the only part read by C-level executives to understand the rationale and approach for the migration.

The video concludes by noting that once the roadmap is compiled, discussed, and approved, the organization is ready to begin the Power BI migration project.
