In this final video in this series, Gaurav covers the elements of a successful migration.
For a successful Power BI migration execution, defining a strong governance plan, ensuring skilled resources and project management, implementing phased releases with thorough testing, and providing comprehensive training are critical steps. While UI design often matches the original reports unless otherwise requested, the core focus is on secure and manageable environments, informed stakeholders, accurate data, and confident users.
Overview
In this final video of our 7 part series on Microsoft Power BI Migration, Gaurav Issar outlines the key steps for a flawless Power BI migration from tools like Tableau or Click. After the initial planning phase, the focus shifts to execution, and the video highlights the following crucial elements:
Define and implement a solid governance plan in Power BI. This should be based on the existing model or created anew, addressing:
Security and access controls
Environment manageability
Nurturing the environment for users (updates, feedback)
Protecting the environment (monitoring, backups, recovery)
Establish a strong project management function with data analytics experience to keep stakeholders informed and support the development team.
Ensure you have skilled Power BI resources; provide necessary training if the existing team lacks proficiency.
Implement a phased release of migrated reports, starting with smaller groups and progressing to larger ones, while retiring the old reports.
Conduct thorough testing of both the UI and the data, especially when backend data structures are changing, to maintain user confidence.
Provide comprehensive user and technical training, with technical teams trained first, followed by interactive user training covering basic functionality, differences from old tools, and new Power BI features before focusing on reports.
Note that UI design is usually not a primary focus in migrations unless specifically requested to match the original reports.
